Respiratory Ailments

Auto Accidents

One of the body’s most vital functions is breathing. The respiratory system allows us to breathe, oxygenating the blood and disposing of toxins by breathing in and out. Unfortunately, our respiratory system can be affected by many medical conditions, which make breathing (and the healthy exchange of gasses in and out of the system) difficult. The two most common respiratory illnesses are the common cold (rhinovirus) and the flu (influenza), but there are a number of serious illnesses affecting the respiratory system.

Some of these include:

  • Asthma: A chronic condition where narrow airways cause wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Increasingly common in children, many outgrow the condition by adulthood.
  • Bronchitis: Inflammation of the tubes (bronchi) that carry air to lungs, causing coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A chronic lung condition often caused by smoking. The damage and scarring of lung tissue makes breathing difficult.
  • Pneumonia: Inflammation and congestion of the lungs caused by bacteria or a virus.
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): A seasonal virus that can cause pneumonia and serious breathing problems.

RSV Season in Florida

In spite of Florida’s famous sunny weather, the state has the longest RSV season in the country, beginning in July and active until January each year. (1) Receiving prompt treatment for RSV and other respiratory ailments can help keep patients from suffering serious complications. Tests can be done to confirm some ailments, including RSV, as well as strep throat and other conditions, so the right medications and treatments can be prescribed.

While many patients visit an emergency room due to a respiratory ailment, waiting times can often be very long. In fact, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute considers an emergency room visit for treatment of a respiratory ailment detrimental to treating respiratory ailments quickly. The Institute recommends non-emergency treatment – including urgent care clinics – as a better way to manage and treat respiratory conditions. (2)
